If not now, then when?

Do you believe in fate? For the longest time, I didn’t believe in it, and I’m not sure what’s my stance now. I think of myself as a balanced individual, I’m quite practical, but I’m also equally emotional and sensitive. Sometimes obviously one overtakes the other, but I try my best to maintain equilibrium.

While growing up, I always thought that all the decisions you take result in the person you are, and that you always have a choice. I still do believe that your actions and decisions make you the person you are today, but it’s not only that. The actions and decisions of the people around you also play a huge role in your life. For example, no matter how hard you try to achieve something, maybe a goal or a promotion or a good score, your boss or your professor’s decision/ opinion also plays a huge role, right? Also, I don’t think you always have a choice or may be you just can’t see the other option. Is that when you think “that’s what was meant to be”? Isn’t it just your decision?

After lots of ups and downs in my life, I’ve started believing that everything happens for a reason, actually, I think that everything that happens, happens for the best.. you just realize it later. Like, when you’re going through a break up, you’re devastated, but after a while, when you’ve moved on and have met someone else, you realize that maybe it was for the best, you did deserve better. Even if the situation is as horrible as someone’s death, maybe it teaches you a lesson of sorts, or makes you more independent. It’s a horrible situation, but maybe you can see something positive in it? Maybe the person was going through too much pain or suffering because of a terrible accident or disease, then wouldn’t you be happy for the person? Finally, he or she can be free of the pain? This might be a bad example cause we don’t even know what happens when you die, but you get the gist of it, right?

I’ve taken loads of good and bad decisions, but I don’t regret any. It has made me the person I am today, and I’m proud of who I’ve become. The bad decisions taught me a lesson, and the good ones just made me stronger. It taught me to rely on my instincts and believe in myself. When I was making a big decision recently, I was quite confused. It was really difficult, and I didn’t trust myself to make the right call. I don’t believe in God, so I didn’t go to the temple and pray or anything. At that time, I just decided not to think of it. But, that’s not what happened. Everything and everyone around me somehow helped me make that decision. Some would say that they were all signs, and everything pointed towards the right decision. At that time, I gave in, thought if not now, then when, and took that leap of faith. I followed my instincts, and I realized that it was fate, it was just meant to be.

When you have to take a decision, you do need to be practical, but you should also think, if not now, then when? You should live in the present and not just keep planning for the future. Are you sure you even have a future? What if there is no tomorrow? Your aim should be to be happy today, cause maybe you won’t see a tomorrow. What if the situation changes or the person you want to go on that trip with isn’t in your life anymore? What if you suddenly have a health issue tomorrow? Or lose your job? There are lots of ifs and buts in life, but you can’t keep waiting for a better tomorrow. Things are not just going to happen, you have to make them happen. And, make them happen today! If you have a better today, only then you can hope for a better tomorrow, right? Find your happiness in the smallest of things – taking that trip with your family or a movie with a close friend or that amazing ice cream you always wanted to try or even just a cup of hot chocolate!

If you don’t do it today, then when will you? You don’t want to end up with any regrets, right? You’re stuck at home because of COVID? Don’t you already regret the day you decided not to hang out with your friends or not taking that trip or just simply going out when you had the chance to? This is just a lesson, so be wiser next time. Remember, if not now, then when?
